Backyard Magic book cover

Our July Book of the Month, Backyard Magic, encourages us to discover the magic of our backyards. The picture book was written by Brisbane-based author Wenda Shurety and illustrated by UK illustrator
Harriet Hobday.

I simply adore this book! Read on to learn more about it.

What happens when you turn off the TV?

When the TV is switched off, Tilly wonders, ‘What can I do now?’ Then, thanks to a little bird, Tilly begins to explore a wonderful and magical new world in her very backyard.

Together, Wenda Shurety and Harriet Hobday have captured beautifully the colourful and magical nature of Tilly’s adventure.

Curiosity unlocks magic’s gate

As I followed Tilly on her magical adventure, I was reminded how curiosity unlocks the gate to magic. At first, Tilly is curious about the little bird and wants to find it in her backyard. Very soon, she becomes immersed in other delights that cross her path.

Backyard magic beautifully shows the reader that magic is not locked away in distant and abstract worlds. It surrounds us, always inviting us to enter and play. All we need to do is let go of distractions, be curious and wander.

Spending time outdoors inspires the imagination

As Tilly shows the reader, spending time in Nature can inspire our creativity and imagination.

As research highlights, unstructured nature-play is particularly important for children between 1 and 5 years; it not only stimulates their imagination but can supports mental health and the development of social skills.

The book would be a wonderful tool for educators and families, who are discussing with their students and children about the importance of device-free time, while encouraging them to engage in more creative and imaginative play.
